A machine that reports pain

An original case in the neighborhood of debates about machine consciousness and the explanatory gap. It is not a quotation from any one paper.

The case asks whether sameness of physical organization settles whether there is something it is like to be the machine. One response says there is no further fact. Another says the organization does not settle the question. Neither response is a test of technical literacy.

Thomas Nagel’s 1974 bat paper is the usual modern statement of why subjective character resists a purely objective description. You do not need that paper to answer, and the questionnaire does not grade you against it.
